On the scene
The city has a regular theatre season. Audiences at the Teatre Municipal de l'Escorxador, the privately owned Teatre Principal, the Teatre de la Llotja and the former Convent de Santa Teresa are treated to a wide-ranging repertoire throughout the year.
The Lleida City Theatre Festival is held in October and November.
Escorxador Theatre
The former municipal abattoir, a modernist building dating from 1918, is today a cultural centre. The main auditorium can seat an audience of 310 people. There is also a secondary space used for experimental and multidisciplinary art. The third stage is provided by the Café Theatre, a multifunctional space.
The impressive backdrop to the entrance lobby is the work of Frederic Amat. The mural measures 7 x 7.5 m, with ceramics taking centre stage in the form of large sheets or doors above which more than five hundred clay horns hang from the wall.
Municipal Theatre Workshop
The Escorxador Theatre is also the home of the Municipal Theatre Workshop, which offers courses in the dramatic arts as well as popular performance workshops and specialist courses. The Workshop's output accounts for much of the local theatre season.
Convent of Santa Teresa
The former convent of Santa Teresa, built for the Barefoot Carmelites in 1704, is now the Escorxador Theatre's Space 3, the former baroque church providing an auditorium with capacity for 185 people.
On 3 May 2013, during the 24th Lleida Puppetry Festival, it was renamed the Julieta Agustí Municipal Theatre in honour of the driving force behind the Lleida Puppetry Centre.
The key features of the church include the engravings and paintings of the dome, along with the coats of arms of the noble families of Lleida. It has fulfilled numerous functions, from a hospital during the War of the Spanish Succession to a refugee shelter during the Civil War.
