The building
Construction of the modern building of the Enric Granados Municipal Auditorium, designed by local architects Ramon Artigues i Ramon Sanabria, involved a range of professional consultants, including in particular a doctor of acoustic physics, Higini Arau. One distinctive feature is the prismatic form of the triple facade and the way in which the roof is interpreted as a fourth facade, seen from the Old Cathedral.
A highly sober design using flags of natural stone, with a rigid insulation gap to guarantee the acoustics.
SYMPHONIC HALL
Located on the ground floor of the building, Hall 1, or the Symphonic Hall, can seat an audience of 803 and has a volume of 8000 m3, divided into: 172 m2 of stage, which can be expanded by a further 33 m2 (205 m2 in all), 394 m2 of stalls and 160 m2 of banked seating. All equipped with spectacular lighting, podiums, public address and audio and video recording facilities. The seating has been redesigned in accordance with the materials in the hall and the level of acoustic absorption, with a reverberation time of 1.87 seconds. The result is a warm, welcoming, relaxing auditorium boasting incredible acoustics.
CHAMBER HALL
Hall 2, or the Chamber Hall, can seat 243, with a volume of 1760 m3 and an area of 360 m2. It is located in the basement of the building, and operates not only as an auditorium for chamber concerts but also as a support space for the main hall, its capacity making it ideal for rehearsals, recordings, competitions, examinations, and even as a conference and projection auditorium. It has a public address system, spectacular lighting and audio and video recording facilities.
BASEMENT
The Auditorium's basement level -3 features Archaeological Remains dating from the 1st century BC to the 20th century. The finds include in particular two collections of ceramics: the Andalusí collection, featuring an outstanding number of pieces found whole, and the similarly extensive modern collection, which is of particular interest as the pieces were all locally made. The earliest exhibits are the Ancient Iberian and Republican era Roman ceramics (1st century BC) found in the lowest levels of the undersoil. A number of chambers were built in the second century, of which the earthenware flooring remains, along with traces of the painted decorations on some of the walls.
A visit to the finds in the basement forms a part of the Secret Lleida tour.
