Sant Jaume Pilgrimage
24 July
A lantern-lit procession accompanying the effigy of the saint from the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to the New Cathedral to commemorate the passage of St James the apostle (Sant Jaume) through Lleida, a staging post on Catalonia's Pilgrim's Way. According to the legend, while the saint was somewhere between Carrer Major and Carrer Cavallers a thorn stuck in his foot, and as it was night he could not see to remove it. An angel holding a lantern descended from heaven to give him light. It was here that the Chapel of the Pilgrim's Foot was built (in 1399), housing inside a sculpture depicting the scene.
