Easter week
6 to 13 April 2020
Easter Week in Lleida has traditionally been characterised by penitential processions which were first founded in the 14th century, and reached their apotheosis four centuries later.
Two processions mark the high points of Lleida's Easter Week. The procession of Our Lady of Sorrows dates from 1753 and begins at the Oratory of the Virgin Mary on Carrer Cavallers, the home of the Congregation of Sorrows, at eight o'clock in the evening on Palm Sunday.
This spectacular religious parade, headed by the Soldiers of Sorrows, comprises of a number of sections representing the seven Sorrows of Mary, the tunics of the respective brotherhoods, the penitents, the bearers of St Lawrence and the tabernacle of Our Lady of Sorrows.
On Good Friday the Church of the Holy Blood is the starting point for the solemn, penitential profession of the Holy Burial, staged by the Congregation of the Holy Blood. The procession, headed by the Soldiers of the Holy Blood, features a number of floats carrying a striking sculptural representation of the Passion and Death of Christ, along with the magnificent and artistic Tabernacle of Our Lady of Solitude, preceded by the Fallen Christ.
